Osteoporosis Osteoporosis Basics

Osteoporosis is not just a disease of older women

Although bone thinning is mostly thought of a woman’s disease, osteoporosis is diagnosed in over 12 million American men. The root of osteoporosis—imbalance in the breakdown and rebuilding of bone—can have a genetic component, or disrupted by certain medications, smoking, alcohol abuse, inactivity, and hormone deficiencies. Getting to the source of bone loss will determine the best treatment options. Bone building medications, calcium and vitamin D supplements, and exercise can help prevent bone fractures, a consequence of untreated osteoporosis.
